Oracy in the Classroom

The first impression you create on others is the way you communicate and represent yourself before others. This is something that works with professionals and also in personal lives. We may also say, it is a factor which influences the way you create the bridge between you and success. Thus, we may guess the importance of ‘oracy’ in the curriculum of students. Oracy helps students formulating their ideas into clear thought, stage themselves and build confidence.

Oracy is letting children discuss ideas with each other under the guidelines of the teacher. The idea is to let kids shape their idiosyncrasy from something they love to do that is talk, but with some expertise of experienced instructor defining roles and tools to them. A discussion is constituted from participates like initiator, explorer, gainsayer, questioner ad summarizer. These roles can either be allotted to them or they can also be given the choice sometimes to pick up their role.

This type of discussions let shy students overcome their fear to speak before others also helping them to develop their notion and thinking with the broader perspective. From this, they learn the importance of listening to others, modifying their belief based on facts that come across them, ethics to respect others views and adapting polite etiquettes they should use to prove their point if they feel something being mentioned is wrong at some point.

Oracy should be conducted in a class at least once in a week and the following comes up some schemes the way it should be done:

Reading

Begin with letting the students read aloud statements from their textbooks. This will open them up for speaking.

Responding

A simple, but highly effective strategy to get students thinking about extending their verbal responses to questions.
So, firstly pose a question. For example:

  • Breathing and respiration are the same things.
  • Should Mahatma Gandhi have not quitted Non-Cooperation Movement?

Then a very simple rule is introduced. Instead of being allowed to just answer ‘yes’ or ‘no’, they are only allowed to answer ‘yes because…..’ or ‘no because…..’
This makes a huge difference to the quality of response you will get back.

Forbidden

Students have to guess a word being described to them – for say consider word Sundar Pichai. However, the rule is there are certain words that can’t be used in the description of getting the student to guess the word like Google, IIT, and Chennai.
This can be easily applied to a wide of subjects and be differentiated by increasing the number of ‘forbidden’ words.

Group Activity

Group your students based on the different types of conversations you want them to have. When starting out, focus first on teaching your students how to work in pairs. Group structures can start with duos, trios gradually increasing the members with their experience and standards.

Here they are taught what good partner talks looked like, vehemence:
• Eye contact
• Keeping in check the pitch of their voice
• Giving their partner personal space

This activity is much more focused on springing up listening capabilities of students as most of the time it has been found that students are so much emphasized with their own thoughts that they don’t give it for what their partner have to say.

The importance of attaining a justified agreeable conclusion

Young children are often found to cling in their opinions which may arise clashes among them as not every child has the same thinking. They will share their ideas, listen to each other, possibly change their minds, and then come to a justified agreeable conclusion which lets them understand that it’s OK to change their mind and being reasonable with the flexibility of their thoughts processing.

With combined efforts of student & teachers and innovative methods to execute, oracy prepares the child to confront the world leaving a significant impression.
